Two eras of installation
In the older properties, expect atmospheric gas tanks on original venting, unflushed for years, with the faults that follow from both: pilot outages, fouled burners and heavy sediment. In newer construction, expect sealed-combustion units, electronic ignition, and diagnostics driven by fault codes on the gas valve rather than by a lighting procedure.
They need different diagnostic approaches. An electronic-ignition unit flashing a code has already narrowed the fault for you; an older standing-pilot tank has to be measured.
What that means for repairs
- Older units: pilot and thermocouple faults, draft problems, burner fouling
- Newer units: ignition and flame-sensing faults, blocked sealed-vent intakes, control board issues
- Both: leaks, sediment noise and drain valve failures
Sealed venting on newer units
Direct-vent and power-vent heaters draw combustion air from outside through a sealed pipe. That removes the draft problems of older installations but introduces its own: intake terminals get blocked by debris, nests or snow, and the unit reads it as an air supply fault and locks out. It is a common winter call and usually resolves at the terminal rather than at the appliance.
Replacement considerations
Where an older atmospheric tank is being replaced, the venting is worth reviewing at the same time rather than reconnecting to a flue that may no longer suit a single appliance. Replacement is the right moment to correct that, along with fitting an expansion tank if the system has become closed.

Questions we get asked
My newer water heater shut down and shows a code. What does that mean?
Electronic-ignition units self-diagnose and blink a fault code, usually with a legend on a label on the heater. Having that code and the model number ready when you call makes the visit far more efficient.
Why would a power-vent heater stop working in winter?
Blocked intake or exhaust terminals are the usual cause — debris, nesting or snow at the outside termination. The unit senses restricted airflow and locks out to stay safe.
